Hong Kong’s Competition Ordinance (CO) came into full effect on 14 Dec 2015. During the preparation phase, the Competition Commission was established and guidelines, policies and other publications prepared. The CO serves to safeguard and enhance a competitive environment for consumers and businesses in Hong Kong by prohibiting anti-competitive conduct by businesses. The presentation will focus on an overview of the CO, the main prohibitions in the CO and the potential impact on the events industry, insights into the Commission’s enforcement priorities and tips for compliance.

Statutory Liabilities of Stakeholders in the Exhibition Industry

Safety and health legislations are enacted to protect employees who work in the Exhibition Industry. Stake holders in the trade who contravene the statutory requirement are subjected to prosecution by the enforcement authority. The victim or his/her beneficiary may sue for damages if there is negligence committed by the duty holder in an accident. The talk elaborates the statutes and common law that are applicable in the exhibition industry. It also elaborates the importance of establishing a safe system of work and safety training for workers.

Call it “digital business”, call it “Online2Offline” or “Offline2Online” – 2016 is the year where the big players of our industry are going digital and collaborating with leaders of the digital economy. 2014 and 2015 were about understanding digitisation and putting strategies in place, now it’s time for trials and implementations. In this seminar, we’ll be putting the spotlight on the most prominent collaboration in our industry: the one between UBM and Alibaba. Mr. Essink will share their journey between offline and online market places, the benefits for our customers, and the learnings for our industry.

Ms. Melanie Tan, Senior Manager (Operations), Competition Commission

Melanie Tan is Senior Manager (Operations) at the Competition Commission. Before joining the Commission in July 2015, Melanie was in private practice at an international law firm in Hong Kong where she advised clients on a wide range of Asian competition law issues. Prior to moving to Hong Kong, Melanie worked in the competition and regulation group of a top-tier Australian law firm.

Melanie is an experienced competition law practitioner and has provided advice on a wide range of competition law and regulatory matters. She has assisted clients in relation to enforcement investigations, merger clearances and advised on competition law issues arising from joint ventures and other commercial transactions. In particular, Melanie has advised clients in the telecommunications, financial services, energy and resources and logistics sectors. She has also advised clients in the telecommunications and financial services sector on regulatory issues.

Melanie is admitted as a solicitor in the Supreme Court of New South Wales, Australia and the High Court in Hong Kong.

Ms Kathleen Gooi, Manager (Operations), Competition Commission

Kathleen Gooi joined the Competition Commission in 2015. She is a Manager in the Operations team and her work focuses on investigating anti-competitive conduct.

Prior to joining the Competition Commission, Kathleen worked in private and public sectors in the UK, Malaysia and Singapore. She is a qualified lawyer in Malaysia and specialises in competition law.

Mr. CW Chu, Principal Safety Consultant, Prowess Safety Consultants Limited

CW Chu is a Chartered Member and Chartered Registered Safety Practitioner of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health; a Chartered Building Engineer and Member of the Chartered Association of Building Engineers; a member of the Institute of Acoustics, a Registered Safety Auditor and Registered Safety Officer with the Labour Department, Hong Kong. The advisor on Workplace Safety of the Contractor’s Authorised Signatory Association since 2015.

He has more than 35 years of working experience in the field of occupational safety and health and been a Divisional Occupational Safety Officer with the Labour Department; a part-time lecturer in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the Middlesex University, the LiPace of the Open University Hong Kong, Occupational Safety and Health Council, the Construction Industry Training Authority. He was appointed as the trainer in safety management training courses held in Beijing and Shanghai; delivered safety talks in China University of Geosciences Wuhan and safety seminars held in Macau, Wuhan and Guangzhou.

Mr. Jimé Essink, President & CEO, UBM Asia

Jimé Essink joined UBM Asia as Chief Executive Officer in November 2007 and was appointed President & Chief Executive Officer in March 2009. He has more than 25 years’ experience of leading and growing B2B media businesses in emerging and developed markets throughout Asia and Europe. Jimé was previously with VNU Exhibitions as CEO of VNU Exhibitions Europe and President of VNU Exhibitions Asia.

Before joining VNU, he spent seven years as Managing Director of Miller Freeman Netherlands (now UBM EMEA), UBM Asia’s sister company in Europe. This office was responsible for the very successful international food ingredients and pharmaceutical ingredients shows in Europe, Asia, South and North America and other international shows in Eastern Europe, Scandinavia and the Netherlands. Jimé studied private and commercial law in Utrecht, the Netherlands.
